Lawn care companies will often tell you that springtime lawn treatment will set you up for a whole year of lawn health. They are right. However, some homeowners are hesitant to take on this springtime treatment because they aren't quite sure what it entails. The reason it does so much for your lawn is that, typically, it is very comprehensive and contains lots of different components. Take a look at the typical components of a spring lawn maintenance session.

1. Dethatching

Thatch is essentially the dead grass that accumulates on top of and in between the new blades of grass. It can keep your young, spring grass from getting the sunlight it needs to grow. And so spring lawn services typically involve removing this thatch with some sort of rake.

2. Overseeding

Your lawn care company will likely scatter some seed over the lawn in the early spring. This will help ensure the lawn comes in thicker once the seeds start germinating.

3. Aeration

Aeration is best done in the fall, but if you did not aerate your lawn in the fall, your lawn care service will typically do it as a part of your springtime routine. Basically, aeration involves punching holes in the ground so that water can work its way down to the grass roots more effectively.

4. Fertilization

Spring is the most important time to fertilize your lawn. The grass will need a lot of nutrients as it begins growing in the spring, and fertilization ensures the grass has these nutrients. One good fertilization in the early spring can actually do a better job of promoting lawn growth than periodic fertilization later in the season.

5. Pesticide Treatment

Grubs and other bugs can wreak havoc on your lawn. The best way to take care of them is to have a pesticide treatment spread over your lawn in the spring. This will allow the pesticides to work on the more vulnerable larvae rather than the adult insects that will later emerge.

6. Weed Control

Weeds are the bane of every homeowner's existence. But if you have spring lawn service performed, your lawn care company will typically spread what's known as a pre-emergent weed control agent. This chemical will keep weeds from germinating in the first place so you don't have to kill them later.

If you take great care of your lawn in the spring, you'll have less to do in the next year. Most lawn care companies offer one springtime maintenance package that includes all of the services above, and sometimes even more.
